In the wake of the devastating floods that ravaged parts of Himachal Pradesh, countless lives have been turned upside down. Homes reduced to rubble, dreams washed away in raging waters — the tragedy continues to unfold with heartbreaking stories emerging every day. Among them is the deeply emotional story of a teacher couple whose lifelong savings vanished in just one night.
Murari Lal Tahkur and Roshni Devi, residents of Thunag village in Mandi district, are both respected educators. Together, they had worked hard for years, dreaming of building their own home — a place where they could retire peacefully and raise their daughter Lokesha. That dream took a tangible step forward when, on June 20, they finalized the purchase of a plot of land. The registration was set for July 7.
To fund their dream home, Murari Lal pooled together nearly ₹30 lakh — earned through decades of teaching and borrowed from relatives and family members. The money was carefully packed into a suitcase, ready to be used for the registration process and construction.
But fate had other plans.
On the night of June 30, disaster struck. Flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains hit the region with little warning. In a matter of hours, everything the couple had built over a lifetime was gone. Their house, belongings, and most painfully, the suitcase full of cash — all swept away by the merciless floodwaters.
“All we had was what we were wearing,” says Murari Lal, his voice trembling. “We lost our home, our possessions, even the life savings we had kept in that suitcase.”
Roshni Devi adds tearfully, “We teach others how to find light in darkness, but today, we ourselves are lost in it.”
What remains? Just ₹650 in Murari Lal’s pocket and one set of clothes each for him, his wife, and their daughter. They now live in temporary shelter, hoping against hope that someone might find the suitcase buried somewhere in the debris.
The couple still visits the ruins of their home, searching desperately through mud and rubble, clinging to the faint possibility that their money might somehow be recovered. But more than the money, it was the dream of a future home that hurts the most.
Today, they face an uncertain tomorrow — no house, no savings, and no clear path ahead. Yet, they hold onto one last hope: that someone, someday, will come and say, “Your suitcase was found… your home can rise again.”
Their story is not just about loss — it’s a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring human spirit in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
