Amazon announced it will partner with Hyundai, a South Korean carmaker, to sell cars on its website starting in 2026. This is a new step for Amazon, which already lets people research cars and buy car parts on its site but not purchase vehicles directly until now.
With this new feature, customers can look for available cars in their area, pick one, and buy it using Amazon’s payment and financing options. After buying, they can either pick up the car at a local dealership or have it delivered. Amazon says this will help dealers reach more customers and make buying cars easier.
Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, said this partnership with Hyundai will make online car buying simpler. As part of the deal, Hyundai will add Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant to its cars starting in 2025.
After the announcement, stock prices for used car companies like CarMax and Carvana, and new car dealers like Lithia Motors and AutoNation, dropped by 5% to 6%.
Even though customers can buy cars on Amazon, the local dealer will still handle the final sale. In many U.S. states, laws make it hard for carmakers like Hyundai to sell directly to customers without using dealers. However, companies like Tesla and Rivian have found ways to sell electric cars directly online in some states by working around these laws or challenging them legally.
For used cars, the rules are less strict, so companies like Carvana can sell preowned vehicles directly to customers online more easily.
