Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, and social media platform X, has made a dramatic entry into American politics by launching his own political party — the America Party . The announcement came after a sharp public conflict with former U.S. President Donald Trump over budget issues.
Musk, once one of Trump’s strongest supporters and the largest donor for his 2024 election campaign, has now turned into one of his fiercest critics. The disagreement began when Trump pushed through a huge domestic spending plan known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk argued that the bill would dangerously increase the U.S. national debt by trillions of dollars and called those who voted for it as promoting “debt slavery.”
In response, Musk vowed to use his money and influence to defeat those lawmakers in the next elections. He announced the formation of the America Party , which he says will fight against what he calls a broken political system dominated by just two parties — Democrats and Republicans.
On X, Musk posted a message saying, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.” He added, “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
He also shared a poll asking if people wanted to break free from the two-party system. Over 1.2 million users responded , with twice as many voting YES . Musk took this as public support and said, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!”
What’s the Plan?
Musk outlined a strategy to start influencing U.S. politics by focusing on a small number of key elections. He suggested targeting 2–3 Senate seats and 8–10 House districts in the 2026 mid-term elections. By doing so, he hopes to gain enough power to affect major decisions in Congress.
His main targets are lawmakers who promised to cut spending but ended up voting for Trump’s expensive bill. Musk has promised to fund their political opponents and ensure they lose in the next primary elections.
Tensions With Trump Rise
The tension between Musk and Trump has grown sharply. After Musk criticized the spending bill, Trump responded by threatening to deport him and remove government contracts from his companies. Although Musk was born in South Africa, he has been a U.S. citizen since 2002.
Trump told reporters, “We’ll have to take a look” when asked about possible deportation or sanctions against Musk.
Historical Concerns About Third Parties
Some political observers worry that Musk’s new party could end up splitting votes, similar to how independent candidate Ross Perot affected the 1992 U.S. presidential race. Perot’s run weakened then-President George H.W. Bush’s chances and helped Democrat Bill Clinton win.
One user on X wrote directly to Musk: “You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it.”
Still, Musk seems determined to push forward with his political ambitions, aiming to reshape the U.S. political landscape and challenge both major parties from a new direction.
As the 2026 elections approach, all eyes will be on how much impact Musk’s America Party can make — and whether it can truly shake up the long-standing two-party system.
