In the race to hire top talent in artificial intelligence (AI), big tech companies like Google are offering high salaries. According to government documents shared by Business Insider, Google pays software engineers between about $109,000 and $340,000 per year. At Meta (the company behind Facebook), software engineers earn between $120,000 and $480,000 .
At Google, other jobs also come with good pay. For example:
- User experience designers can earn up to $230,000
- Product managers can make up to $280,000
- Research scientists may earn as much as $303,000
- Data engineers can get paid up to $175,000
These numbers come from over 6,800 official reports Google sent to the U.S. Department of Labor in early 2024. These reports are needed when the company hires workers from other countries using special work visas called H-1B visas.
The salary figures listed here are only base salaries , meaning they don’t include extra money like signing bonuses, stock options, or other benefits.

- Customer Engineer: $85,000 – $228,000
- Data Scientist: $133,000 – $260,000

Google doesn’t usually share salary details publicly, but other official reports show how much employees earn. One report sent to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that in 2024, a mid-level employee at Google earned an average of $331,894 , which is 5% more than in 2023 .
Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, earned over $10.7 million in 2024 — about 32 times more than the average Google employee.
Because there are not enough AI experts to fill all the open jobs, tech companies are offering very large pay packages to attract top talent. For example, Meta reportedly offered one engineer over $200 million to join their team.
