Three Indian citizens were kidnapped on July 1 during a terror attack in Mali , a country in West Africa. The attack happened at a cement factory called Diamond Cement Factory, located in Kayes , a western region of Mali.
Armed men attacked the factory and took three Indian workers hostage during the incident. So far, no group has officially said they carried out the kidnapping, but a terror group linked to Al-Qaeda , called JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) , has claimed responsibility for other attacks across Mali on the same day. These attacks targeted military and government places in different towns.
Situation in Mali
Mali has been facing violence from Islamist terror groups since 2012 . What started in the north has now spread to many parts of the country and even into nearby countries like Burkina Faso and Niger . The current government in Mali is run by the military, and the situation has gotten worse with increasing attacks from terror groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS . There are also problems with local rebellions and crime.
India’s Response
The Indian government has strongly condemned the kidnapping. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has asked the Malian government to do everything possible to rescue the Indians safely and quickly .
The Indian Embassy in Mali’s capital, Bamako , is working closely with local authorities, police, and the factory management to find the missing Indians. They are also staying in touch with the families of the kidnapped people.
The MEA is keeping a close watch on the situation and is trying to help in every way possible.
Advice to Indians in Mali
The Indian government has also advised all Indians living in Mali to be extra careful and stay alert. They should keep in regular contact with the Indian Embassy for updates and support.
