As millions gather in Puri, Odisha, to witness the grandeur of the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024 , the spiritual fervour has once again brought into focus one of the most enigmatic elements of the Jagannath Temple — the mysterious third step , known as Yamashila , believed to be the resting place of Yamraj , the Hindu god of death.
The temple, one of the revered Char Dhams in Hinduism, is not only a site of immense devotion but also home to several ancient secrets. Among them, the legend of Yamashila continues to intrigue devotees and scholars alike.
According to mythology, when Yamraj approached Lord Jagannath with concern that no souls were reaching Yamlōk (the abode of the dead), the deity offered him a solution — reside on the third step of the temple’s entrance. It was decreed that anyone who steps on this stone after having darshan of Lord Jagannath would attain moksha from sins but would still have to face Yamraj.
This belief has led generations of devotees to avoid stepping directly on the black-coloured Yamashila, even going so far as to touch it reverently and leap over it. The temple authorities have marked the step distinctly for easy identification — a black stone among otherwise golden steps.
Meanwhile in Delhi: Jagannath Yatra Causes Major Traffic Disruptions
While the Rath Yatra in Puri draws lakhs of devotees, a parallel celebration in Delhi’s Hauz Khas triggered traffic chaos on Friday. As part of the festivities, the Jagannath Yatra procession took place between 2 PM and 6 PM, leading to major diversions and roadblocks across key routes in south Delhi , including Aurobindo Marg , Ring Road , Outer Ring Road , and August Kranti Marg .
The Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories urging commuters to avoid these areas and opt for alternate routes. Vehicles heading towards MG Road , Mehrauli , and Gurugram were diverted via Ring Road and August Kranti Marg , while those coming from Mehrauli to New Delhi were advised to use the Outer Ring Road and Panchsheel Flyover .
Emergency vehicles were given access, though advised to avoid Aurobindo Marg if possible. Commuters were reminded to park only in designated zones, with strict action against illegal parking.
Authorities urged people heading to airports or railway stations to plan early and use public transport to avoid delays. Real-time updates were shared through official social media handles.
Why This Tale Fascinates India
From the spiritual mystery of Yamashila to the modern-day logistics of a religious procession , the story of Jagannath Yatra encapsulates the very essence of Indian culture — where mythology meets reality , and faith shapes both tradition and daily life.
Whether you’re bowing before the divine or navigating city streets, the presence of Lord Jagannath seems to guide every step — except, perhaps, the third one.
