Former U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk after Musk announced the formation of a new political party called the “American Party.”
The move comes after a major disagreement between Trump and Musk over a government spending bill that Trump recently signed into law. The bill cuts taxes and removes some electric vehicle (EV) subsidies.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said Musk had gone “completely off the rails” and described him as a “train wreck.”
“I’m sad to see Elon Musk going off track like this,” Trump wrote. He added that third parties only bring confusion and chaos to politics.
Musk made the announcement on his social media platform X, saying he was launching the American Party to give people more freedom and offer an alternative to the existing Republican and Democratic parties. He hinted at the move for weeks, especially after clashing with Trump over economic policies.
“By a 2-to-1 margin, people want a new political party — and now they will have it!” Musk wrote.
The disagreement between Trump and Musk is surprising because the two were once close allies. Musk had supported Trump’s re-election campaign financially, and Trump had even named Musk to lead a government efficiency task force known as DOGE, aimed at cutting federal spending.
Trump said Musk’s idea of starting a third party was “ridiculous” and unnecessary, given the success of the Republican Party.
He also criticized Musk for pushing an “Electric Vehicle Mandate” that would force everyone to switch to electric cars quickly. Trump reminded people that during his election campaign, he had clearly stated that he would remove EV tax credits if elected — and Musk had agreed with him at the time.
“This was part of my plan from the start, and Elon knew it,” Trump said.
Musk’s decision also drew criticism from some of Trump’s supporters, including James Fishback, CEO of the investment firm Invest Azoria. Fishback said he delayed plans to launch a Tesla-focused stock fund in response to Musk’s political move.
“This shows Musk is distracted from running Tesla properly,” Fishback wrote on X. “His main job should be looking after Tesla’s employees and shareholders, not starting political parties.”
The growing tension between Trump and Musk marks a sharp turn in their relationship, which until recently seemed very strong.
